Why We Love Recycled Bricks
We love to use recycled bricks, here’s why:
Lower carbon
By using recycled bricks, not only are you supporting the circular economy and reducing the amount of construction waste ending up in landfill, but you are reducing the amount of embodied carbon in your new home.
According to The Brick Pit, for every 2000 bricks you use in a building that are recycled instead of new, you are saving 1000kg of CO2 emissions.
They’re cheaper
"Bricks don't need to be bought new, if you go for fancy new bricks, they can be about 100% more expensive," Clinton says. "It's not hard to convince a reasonable client that using recycled building units is better for the environment than buying new. Why would you buy new if thousands of bricks are already sitting at The Brick Pit? Why not reuse what's already available?
They have character
Unlike their new counterparts, recycled bricks have had a previous life and they show it. "There are more than enough dry pressed bricks manufactured over the last 150 years coming out of demolition projects dating from the late Victorian to Californian bungalow periods, to create new buildings for the next century," Clinton said.
How they get recycled
Once The Brick Pit team has rescued some bricks from a demolition site, they remove any excess mortar or material from them and then sort them.
"It's definitely worth a visit to brick recyclers like The Brick Pit before being seduced into using the far more expensive brand new designer bricks."
