9 Reasons why we love FRP

Before diving into the benefits of using Fibre-Reinforced Plastic (FRP), let’s clarify what it is. FRP is a composite material made of a resin — typically epoxy, polyester or ester — reinforced with fibres, most commonly fibreglass.

Here are 9 reasons why FRP is one of our favourite materials to use:

1) It’s structural

FRP is load bearing to an extent. This provides the cost and aesthetic benefits of using no or less substructural elements. It also means it can be used as a balustrade like in our Balmy Palmy House as seen above.

2) It’s quick to install

Because FRP comes in standard panel dimensions, once the design has been finalised, the FRP panels are quick to install, fixing them with clips or screws. They are also lightweight which means they are easily handled by our team on site.

3) It’s cost effective

Usually used in industrial settings, FRP is not as expensive as typical architectural products or finishes and it lasts for a long time making it a worthwhile investment.

4) It’s colourful

Being a manufactured material, it comes in an endless variety of colours without the need to be painted. Is it obvious we have a favourite colour?

5) It’s maintenance free

FRP does not rust and requires no painting, oiling, sanding or finishing of any kind.

6) It’s versatile

FRP can be used in ceilings, floors, balustrades, walls, canopies, balconies, fences, gates and anywhere else!

7) Plants love it

FRP is a great medium for plants to climb up and down.

8) Size matters

FRP comes in a variety of apertures from minimesh to industrial grating, meaning it’s suitable for creating a sense of privacy whilst still maintaining ventilation. Larger apertures are great for creating that sense of enclosure or space, whether it’s to maintain views to the street or drink in those beautiful ocean vistas.

9) It’s fun!

With the variety of colours and patterns the creative opportunities are endless. Paired with lighting, at night, the effects can be impressive!
